82% of data breaches involve cloud-stored data. Most popular cloud services can read your files - they're just encrypted against outsiders, not against the provider itself.
"Encrypted" Doesn't Mean Private
Google Drive, Dropbox, and OneDrive encrypt your files, but they hold the encryption keys. They can decrypt and read your files for AI training, legal requests, or policy enforcement.
Provider encrypts your files on their servers with their keys
Examples: Google Drive, Dropbox
Files encrypted before leaving your device with your keys
Examples: Proton Drive, Sync.com, Tresorit

Unless using zero-knowledge encryption, avoid storing:
Tax returns and financial documents (without encryption)
Password lists or recovery codes
Medical records
Legal documents
Nude or intimate photos
Business trade secrets
Government IDs (passports, licenses)
Anything you'd be devastated to see leaked
If you use iCloud, enable Advanced Data Protection. It turns on end-to-end encryption for iCloud Backup, Photos, Notes, and more. Even Apple can't access your data.
Settings → [Your Name] → iCloud → Advanced Data Protection
Either switch to zero-knowledge providers, encrypt before uploading, or be deliberate about what you store in the cloud.
