Security Camera Privacy Guide

Your security cameras can become a privacy liability if footage streams to company servers. Learn to choose cameras that keep your recordings under your control.

Cloud Cameras = Someone Else's Computer

When footage uploads to the cloud, you're trusting the company with intimate recordings of your home. They can be hacked, subpoenaed, or accessed by employees. Local storage keeps you in control.

Local vs Cloud Storage

Local Storage (NVR/SD Card)

Pros

You control your footage 100%
No monthly subscription fees
Works without internet
No cloud hacking risk
Faster access to recordings

Cons

Physical theft can take recordings
Hardware failure risk
Self-managed backups needed
Initial hardware cost higher

Best for privacy-conscious users

Cloud Storage

Pros

Footage survives theft/fire
Easy remote access
Automatic backups
Less technical setup

Cons

Monthly subscription required ($3-30/mo)
Company has access to your footage
Requires constant internet
Privacy policy can change
Service can be discontinued

Only with trusted providers + encryption
