Every time you visit a website, your device asks a DNS server for the IP address. By default, these queries are unencrypted and visible to your ISP. Encrypted DNS fixes this.
Traditional DNS sends queries in plaintext. Your ISP (and anyone on the network) can see every domain you request.
ISP Can See | Still Protected by HTTPS |
|---|---|
| Every website you visit | Page content (HTTPS encrypts that) |
| When you visited each site | What you typed or clicked |
| How often you visit sites | Login credentials |
| Apps connecting to servers | Encrypted app data |
Note: Even with encrypted DNS, your ISP can still see the IP addresses you connect to. They can't see the domain name, but can sometimes infer it. A VPN hides this too.
